After failing to wipe out humanity with Doomsday Meteor, The Asylum tries again with Planetquake. This time out, an attempt to retrieve a World War II nuclear weapon from a ship at the bottom of the Mariana Trench ends in disaster when The seabed broke away from the trench and a bomb was detonated as a result of the collapse.
This caused large earthquakes and tsunamis on both sides of the Pacific Ocean.
Seattle has been hit hard. And that’s where Dr. Anderson (Erica Duke, Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus, Bullet Train Down) works at the National Earthquake Data Center. Along with her colleague Peter Huston (Phillip Andre Botello, All Jacked Up, Full of Worms), they make it through just fine, but Sophie Dr. Anderson’s (Erin Gall) daughter is stranded on a plane circling the city.
As if that wasn’t enough, NSA head General West (Michael Pare, Wanted Man, The Wild Man: Skunk Ape) issues an ultimatum to find Dresden. Her brother (Doug Jeffrey, Indecent Behavior III, Losing Control) has been inside for three days. He’s the only one who knows how to keep these earthquakes from spreading and tearing the world apart. But after he left the NSA, he disappeared from the grid. And she knows just as much. With them knowing where he is.
His film debut came after making a few shorts and music videos. Writer/director Monroe Robertson wastes no time setting things up. Unfortunately, he almost immediately undermines what should be a major subplot by having Dresden appear on his own and almost immediately after his sister hangs up.
Planetquake’s plot then pivots to an attempt to bring an orbital weapons platform that has been unused and unnoticed since Regan’s presidency, to life, and to use lasers to reduce pressure on the tectonic plates and stop the earthquake problem. Well, it hasn’t been tested yet. Because Dresden had only copied a single copy of the weapon code when he left. And the government just let it sit there instead of going after him. That sounds less incredible than a global earthquake. But this is a movie from The Asylum, so that’s to be expected.
And since Planetquake is an Asylum movie, we can expect many scenes of the lead actor staring at the screen and typing furiously on the keyboard. While we hear about the destruction they didn’t have the budget to show. We occasionally get shots of CGI waves crashing into the city and buildings collapsing. But that’s it. doomovie.win

Thankfully, Sophie’s father (Anthony Jensen, Attack on Titan, The Gallows Act II) finds her.
We then see footage of the disaster mixed in with some footage that appears to have been filmed at the demolition site. But that effect would be lost due to faulty editing. We see the person the emergency team pulls from the rubble early in the film. and is trapped under the wreckage later in the film.
Even the Asylum Planetquake movie lacks action. The lead actor spends most of the film in an underground bunker that shakes from time to time. And that was pretty tense. Even the few outdoor scenes in what is supposed to be the earthquake that devastated Seattle are devoid of threat. After finding the road to the bunker that was no longer usable Our heroes just walk to their destination. The film doesn’t even bother showing the trip to the oil rig that serves as the climax.
To Robertson’s credit The dialogue is a little better than usual for one of these films. But that doesn’t change the fact that there’s too much content. If I want to spend eighty-four minutes watching people talk I will rent a drama. And to add insult to injury, the little impact we received was weak. There are disturbing images of a plane making a hard landing. And the tsunami scene ends when the waves reach the shore. So we don’t see any destruction.
The result is a patently boring film. Even if it takes a little effort and a little more money. It still doesn’t cause an earthquake. But at least it would be fun, and even devoted fans of The Asylum find it hard to say anything good about Planetquake.
